There are many large organizations that supply desserts, sweets and other treats for parties around Canada. Each of them has a large platform with millions of yearly customers, but very few of them use that platform to raise awareness for issues and make a difference. Today we’re going to give you a behind the scenes look into Bakes with Rags, our custom cake shop that thrives on helping charities and giving back to the community.

In this post, we’ll go over our backstory, mission statement, and future plans as an organization.

What is Bakes with Rags?

Bakes with Rags is a Custom Cakeshop in Mississauga, Ontario, Canada. It is heavily focused on creating a unique and personal dessert that will touch the heart of the receiver.  Additionally, she focuses on enhancing parties or any celebration. It is owned by Raganya Ponmanadiyil, a talented artist who brought her love for desserts and artistic ability together to create cakes that are more than just food, but an experience.

The term “Rags” is simply Raganya’s nickname, and no rags are actually involved in the baking (if you were wondering). Raganya operates straight from her home kitchen in Mississauga and has clients all over the Greater Toronto Area. Custom Cakes that can contribute to charity and awareness for Autism awareness is her main focus.

Our Story and Values

Coming from a South Indian family in Mississauga, Raganya Ponmanadiyil has always had a passion for baking. She also has a passion for helping those in need and contributing to social responsibility.

Raganya’s artistic talent needed to be shown in some sort of form, so she decided to start practicing with cakes. It started with watching YouTube tutorials and getting advice from family members, and eventually, she decided to make it into a business!

Raganya and her mother baked together in her childhood often, creating cakes, cupcakes, and other creations for birthdays. family parties, and even just for fun. Her talent quickly showed, which led to some amazing custom cakes being created. This came to eventually manifest into her passion for baking, which created a nostalgic feeling every time she baked cakes.

The Beginning

In the beginning, Raganya started with clients such as her parents, close friends, and family friends as well. This is where she learned that people loved her talent and that they would be willing the recommend her custom cakes to their connections if she was willing to expand.

Caking Success

Firstly, Raganya grew her clientele through word-of-mouth recommendations through her friends and family, where the business started to boom. She created a Facebook Page and an Instagram, where she displays her custom cakes, cupcakes, and other treats.

Giving Back to the Community

Now, Raganya bakes part-time on top of her job as a supervisor at a school for kids with autism. She loves her full-time position helping these children with disabilities because she feels like she is doing her part to make a difference. But she believes she can use the success of her business to help even more through charity!

Additionally, the platform Rags created with her cakeshop and social media accounts was seen as a perfect opportunity to help a charity cause. Now, Bakes with Rags is making a pledge to donate $1 of her profits for each cake sold to Jake’s House. JH is a charitable organization that focuses on raising autism awareness, and support for autistic people around Canada. Her focus on custom cakes for charity is her way of giving back to the community, as well as filling their stomachs with delicious goods. Every customer of Bake with Rags can feel personal satisfaction. This is because ordering a custom cake for their family also contributes to a greater cause.

Today, we are going to be discussing Post Game Brewing Co., an up and coming company that currently has their Locker Room Lager beer available in multiple provinces. The product is different from other typical beers due to it’s hockey theme and its value for an Ontario brewed craft beer. What is Locker Room Lager?

Locker Room Lager is the beer produced by Post Game Brewing. Selling at $2.60 for a 473ml can, the product is brewed locally and sold in Beer Store’s across Ontario, Manitoba and Alberta. Maintaining a hockey theme in their imagery and promotions, the product is one for the die hard lovers of the sport throughout the country.

Beer companies are all the same when it comes down to packaging and promotions. These days, very few have something about them that really hits you. Locker Room Lager is one of those few. Their packaging, hockey based. Their social media presence, their story, their merchandise, all hockey. They’ve even gone as far as to include things such as stick tape as a free gift in cases.

It’s important to direct some of the focus on craft beer lovers. That is the part of our demographic that is always willing to try out something new, something they’re ahead of the curve for. Along with that, with the company having the image it has set up for itself, it’ll excite hockey fans all around. PGB has promoted itself at minor league hockey games, hockey based events to get the word out there and with a bigger push, it could lead to bigger events, bigger leagues, even as far as the NHL, ultimately leading to being in front of a massive audience and of course, profit.

What to do?

In order to reach out to who we need to, the first thing we need to do is continue pushing in promoting at hockey games. Beer is already a big seller at these events and a positive outcome is inevitable. We would also need to further push our social media presence. PGB’s is minimal at the moment, however if they remain consistent and keep things interesting for the consumer, it would increase our activity and clicks on our site and respected forms of social media. Lastly, we need to increase our availability in other parts of the country. Currently, the product is only available in Beer Store’s and LCBO’s in Ontario, Alberta and Manitoba. Being available in other parts of the country, it would increase revenue, notoriety and bring more potential to being successful.

My friends and I were visiting Mississauga when we had an urge to go to a bar. We were near the Winston Churchill and Dundas St. W area when we stumbled upon JJQ’s Billiard & Lounge Bar. JJQ’s is a Billiard Bar Mississauga. From the first impression we all enjoyed the atmosphere that JJQ’s radiated. We instantly blended in with the fun and relaxed environment.

My group of friends love to compete with one another. When we discovered that JJQ’s was a billiard bar we were ecstatic. The pool section had lots of tables in pristine condition, a modern bar, and music that got everyone moving, so there were no excuses for your match results. If you love shooting pool this is definitely the place to visit. Once you worked up an appetite you can choose from the yummy food and drink specials JJQ’s provides while watching a game on numerous big screen TV’s.

Pool Tournament

If you’re a competitive cue sports player, then you will be interested in JJQ’s Billiard Tournament. JJQ’s hosts a Billiard tournament every Wednesday and Saturday where men and women from all skill levels participate for a grand prize and two free draft beers. After talking to the friendly staff, they told me they will be introducing a single player and a team pool league where scheduled games will take place at JJQ’s. At the end of the league season the team with the most points will go home with a trophy and JJQ $50 credit for food and beverages.

This would be an awesome opportunity to meet new people with similar interest, so either bring your best game as a competitive cue sports player or come out to just have great time.

It’s a fun game for multiple people to play.

They have music playing with a selection of the “Hot Top 40” songs. On weekends JJQ’s hires a DJ to add to the bundle of goodness you receive when you stop by. From what the workers tell me, the DJ accepts song requests, so that’s a bonus.

Conclusion

Overall, JJQ’s Billiard & Lounge Bar is a great place to stop by for a drink and a fun game of pool. I was satisfied with the wonderful atmosphere. The food was terrific, and selection of craft beers were more than pleasing. I would recommend the spicy wings; they were full of flavour. Hockey is a sport ingrained in our Canadian culture, most of us play or have played at some point in our lives. But one of the little caveats of hockey that we take for granted is after the game, or the post-game. It is the time-honored tradition when your come of drinking age to have an ice-cold beer to celebrate your win, or lament your loss with the team. This is a market that largely remains untargeted by the major beer companies. They may market their beer for after game at a local bar or pub, but few truly look to target the locker room. Everyone needs a group to belong too, no matter how introverted you may be, and for some this is a perfect way to get out and enjoy other people’s company. It allows you to relax and for at least a little bit forget the troubles of the world and enjoy time with friends.

How do teams usually enjoy their locker room beers?

Every team has its on list of rules when it comes to beers in the locker room. For example, my team has a list that includes: no discount beers, no light beer and if you can’t make it that’s fine, but the beer had better make it still. While we all agree on that, some other teams might now. That’s the beauty of this, every team can custom tailor their rules and list for how they enjoy their beer. Some teams choose to employ a light beer only rule. Some set hard limits on how much beer can be brought any given week. But it all comes back to the same basic premise, there had better be beer in the locker room.

So, to sum it all up, I guess what I am saying is you can form friendships that last a lifetime over the simple act of cracking a beer in the locker room. I know it sounds odd and funny, but I can not say it enough how easy it is. I implore you, next time you play if your team doesn’t already, bring a few beers for the team and pass them out after the game. It may be a life changer!

Customer can requests certain songs directly to the DJ who usually accepts them but may refuse. These are great additions for a billiards bar, but Thirsty Thursday is my favourite night of the week  with their cheap drink special of 5-dollar drafts.

As I explored the internet looking for places to eat I came across a hidden gem in Mississauga called “JJQ’s”. I would have never thought I would be a person that would play pool or even shoot darts at a bar. JJQs is great for many reasons including their prioritization of the quality of food and customer experience. Compared to other restaurant JJQ’s is far superior when it comes to customer experience.
